Getting There
Take KTX from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station to Gangneung Station (1 hour 50 min, ₩27,600). This is one of the fastest train connections in Korea — Gangneung became a KTX destination for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Gangneung crept up on me. I had come primarily to walk Gyeongpo Beach and eat whatever the fishing boats brought in at Jumunjin Port, and I was not expecting a city with this much character. The coffee street at Anmok Beach alone — a strip of independent cafes perched on a cliff above the East Sea, each one competing to have the best ocean view and the best beans — would justify the train ticket from Seoul.

The KTX connection built for the 2018 Winter Olympics changed Gangneung’s relationship with the capital. An hour and fifty minutes, ₩27,600, and you step off into salt air and the sight of the East Sea stretching uninterrupted toward Japan. The Taebaek Mountains are visible inland, the horizon is enormous, and the coastal light is different from anywhere in western Korea — sharper, cleaner, with the quality that only comes from facing an open ocean.

Sea urchin bibimbap at a Jumunjin Port restaurant is one of those meals I keep returning to in memory. A stone bowl of rice topped with fresh sea urchin so recently caught it still had the faint sweetness of cold seawater, mixed tableside with a raw egg and sesame oil and the deep red of gochujang. ₩22,000 for something I would pay twice that for without complaint.

The Winter Olympics legacy is more interesting than I expected. The speed skating oval and curling rink are still operational, and on winter weekends Koreans come to skate and watch. The Olympic park has a good museum and the venues are open for public recreation in ways that post-Olympic facilities rarely are. If you come in February, the winter sports culture here is genuinely alive.

The Arrival

The KTX emerges from mountain tunnels and suddenly the East Sea fills the entire horizon — the largest uninterrupted ocean view in Korea.

Why Gangneung should be on your itinerary

Gangneung sits at the intersection of Korea’s two great coastal pleasures: East Sea seafood culture and mountain trail access. The city is the natural base for Seoraksan National Park (40 minutes north toward Sokcho), Odaesan National Park (40 minutes south), and the Jeongdongjin sunrise beach (30 minutes south) — all accessible without a car via public bus.

The coffee culture is a genuine phenomenon rather than a tourist fabrication. Anmok Beach developed its cafe strip organically in the late 2000s and has since become a pilgrimage destination for Korean coffee enthusiasts. The cafes are almost all independent, most roast their own beans, and the competition for ocean-view window seating on weekend mornings is vigorous but good-natured. Settling into a window seat with a hand-drip pour-over and the sound of waves below is one of the better mornings available in Korea.

Gyeongpo Lake and Beach is the other anchor — a long barrier beach with a tidal lake behind it, famous for sunrise photography. The Gyeongpo Pavilion on the lakeside has been subject to Korean literati poetry since the Joseon era. In April, the cherry trees along the lake path bloom simultaneously with azalea hillsides behind — a combination that makes this one of the most photographed spring locations in the country.

What To Explore

Ocean-view coffee terraces, a sunrise beach that poets have written about for 600 years, and a fishing port where the catch arrived this morning.

What should you do in Gangneung?

Anmok Beach Coffee Street — Korea’s most famous coffee destination: a cliff-top strip of independent cafes above the East Sea. Go for a morning pour-over with the window open and the ocean below. Terarosa is the most famous roaster; many smaller cafes are equally good and less crowded. ₩5,000-12,000/drink.

Gyeongpo Beach and Lake — A long barrier beach with the tidal Gyeongpo Lake behind it. Famous for sunrise from the beach (arrive by 5:30 AM in summer). The Gyeongpo Pavilion on the north shore dates to 1326. April cherry blossoms line the lake walking path. Free to visit.

Jumunjin Port — A working fishing harbor 10km north of the city where the catch is sold fresh from the boats each morning. Restaurants around the port serve sea urchin bibimbap (₩20,000-25,000), fresh hoe sashimi (₩30,000-50,000/person), and charcoal-grilled whole squid (₩15,000).

Ojukheon — The birthplace of Yi I (1536-1584), Korea’s greatest Neo-Confucian philosopher whose portrait is on the ₩5,000 banknote. The house and garden are beautifully preserved. The black bamboo grove is worth the visit alone. Entry ₩3,000/adult.

Seogeumgang — A dramatic fjord-like inlet near Jeongdongjin, usually combined with the famous sunrise point. Sea-carved cliffs and emerald water that looks entirely unlike anywhere else on the Korean coast. Access by taxi from Gangneung (₩25,000).

2018 Winter Olympics Venues — The Gangneung Olympic Park is open for recreation; the Gangneung Oval speed skating rink offers public skating sessions in winter. ₩5,000-15,000 for recreational use.

✈️ Scott's Gangneung Tips
  • Getting There: KTX from Seoul Cheongnyangni Station (not Seoul Station) to Gangneung (1 hr 50 min, ₩27,600). Allow extra travel time to reach Cheongnyangni from central Seoul. Book in advance on Korail.com, especially summer weekends.
  • Best Time: June-August for beach weather. September-October for clear skies and autumn color in nearby Odaesan. April for Gyeongpo Lake cherry blossoms. February for the emptiest beaches and winter sports venue access.
  • Money: KRW — ₩28,000/day budget. Sea urchin bibimbap ₩22,000 at Jumunjin Port. Coffee ₩5,000-12,000 on Anmok Beach strip. Fresh hoe sashimi ₩30,000-50,000/person. Keep ₩50,000 cash for port markets.
  • Don't Miss: Sunrise at Gyeongpo Beach (5:30 AM in summer, 7 AM in winter). Walk from your guesthouse in the dark, watch the sun emerge from the East Sea horizon, then go directly to Anmok Beach for coffee. That sequence is the definitive Gangneung morning.
  • Food Order: Sea urchin bibimbap at Jumunjin Port for lunch (₩22,000), a pour-over at Anmok Beach in the afternoon, fresh hoe sashimi platter at a port restaurant for dinner (₩30,000-50,000). That is the complete Gangneung food day.
  • Local Phrase: "Haemul juseyo" (해물 주세요) — seafood please. Point at the tank and say this. Works at any port restaurant in Gangneung with immediate and excellent results.

The Food

The East Sea gives Gangneung everything it needs — sea urchin from morning boats, squid grilled whole at the port, and a coffee culture that rivals Seoul.

Where to Stay

Stay near Gyeongpo Beach for the sunrise walk, or in the city center for train station access and the Ojukheon neighborhood.

Where should you stay in Gangneung?

Budget (₩40,000-80,000/night, $29-59): Multiple guesthouses and pensions cluster around Gyeongpo Beach and the city center. Gyeongpo Beach pensions start around ₩50,000/night on weekdays; weekend prices rise to ₩80,000-120,000. Book ahead for summer weekends when the entire coast fills up.

Mid-Range (₩80,000-180,000/night, $59-133): Sol Beach Gangneung at ₩120,000-180,000/night is the best mid-range option near Gyeongpo. The main hotel strip along the beach has multiple options in the ₩80,000-150,000 range during weekdays.

Luxury (₩200,000+/night, $148+): Seamarq Hotel near Gyeongpo Beach at ₩220,000-350,000/night has the best ocean views and facilities in Gangneung. Opened for the 2018 Olympics and remains the top accommodation in the city.

Before You Go

Two days minimum: sunrise at Gyeongpo, coffee at Anmok, sea urchin at Jumunjin. Three days if you are heading north to Seoraksan.

When is the best time to visit Gangneung?

Summer (June-August): Peak beach season. Gyeongpo is warm and busy, seafood is abundant, and the mountains behind the city are vivid green. Expect weekend crowds and higher accommodation prices on the coast.

Spring (April-May): Cherry blossoms along Gyeongpo Lake path in April are among Korea’s best outside Seoul. Comfortable temperatures (12-20°C), excellent seafood, fewer crowds than summer. A strong recommendation.

Autumn (September-October): Clear skies, excellent mountain visibility, comfortable temperatures (12-18°C). Foliage color in nearby Odaesan National Park. September-October seafood peaks in richness as fish fatten before winter.

Winter (December-February): Cold (0-5°C) with the cleanest air and emptiest beaches. Winter Olympics venues open for recreational skating. Sunrise photography at Jeongdongjin is a Korean tradition specifically in winter. The coffee street operates year-round and is excellent in cold weather.

Gangneung is one of Korea’s most underrated cities for international visitors. Koreans know it well; most foreigners pass through on the way to Seoraksan. Give it two days and it will give back an East Sea experience that Seoul simply cannot provide. Plan the full East Coast circuit at our Korea travel guide or explore more at the destinations page.
