Getting There
Bus from Gwangju Buk Terminal (35 min, ₩2,000) or taxi from Gwangju (₩20,000-25,000). Gwangju is reached by KTX from Seoul (1h45m, ₩47,400). AirAsia flies to Incheon from Bangkok, KL, and Manila.

Damyang is Korea’s bamboo capital — the town is defined by bamboo the way Boseong is defined by green tea, and the way Andong is defined by its Confucian academies. Juknokwon, the main bamboo garden, covers 31 hectares of densely planted bamboo that reaches 10-15 meters overhead. Walking into it feels like entering a different climate zone entirely: the temperature drops two or three degrees, the road noise fades away, and the light turns green and diffuse as it filters through millions of leaves. It is one of the most genuinely atmospheric natural spaces I have walked in Korea.

I came on a June morning when the bamboo had reached peak summer height. The stalks were thick as my forearm and so close together that looking into the grove felt like looking into an infinite green corridor. The sound of bamboo moving in the breeze — that distinctive hollow knock — filled the whole garden. There was a class of Korean primary school children walking the path ahead of me, and even they had gone quiet.

The Metasequoia Road is the other major draw, and it is a very different kind of beautiful. An 8.5km avenue of enormous metasequoia trees planted by the local government in the 1970s, now grown into a cathedral canopy that arches completely over the road. In autumn the trees turn amber and gold and the road looks like it belongs in New England rather than Jeollanam-do. In spring the new growth is intensely, almost fluorescently green. Rent a bicycle in town (₩5,000-8,000/hour) and ride the full length — it takes about an hour at a relaxed pace and you can stop anywhere for photographs.

The dakgalbi came as a welcome surprise. Damyang claims its own version of the spicy stir-fried chicken dish (common across Korea), using local bamboo shoot as a base ingredient. The bamboo gives the dish an unusual crunch and a faint sweetness that the standard version lacks. Order it at one of the restaurants around Damyang traditional market where the recipe has been unchanged for thirty years.

The Arrival

The bus from Gwangju takes 35 minutes and you can see the bamboo hillsides from the window before you even arrive in town.

Why Damyang should be on your itinerary

Damyang offers something unusual in Korean tourism: a destination that is entirely about natural beauty and slow time. There are no UNESCO monuments to rush between, no queues for observation decks, no temple crowds. There is a bamboo forest, a tree-lined road, a market with good food, and a town that has the confidence to be exactly what it is without apology.

The bamboo forest photography potential is exceptional regardless of season. Morning light in Juknokwon creates vertical shafts through the canopy that look calculated but are entirely natural. The paths fork and re-fork, creating the sense of exploration even within a relatively contained garden. If you have a camera and an hour to spare before the day-trippers arrive, this is one of the best photo opportunities in southwest Korea.

Damyang pairs naturally with Gwangju — Korea’s fifth-largest city and the political and cultural capital of Jeolla Province, home to the 1980 democracy movement (memorialized at the May 18th Democratic Uprising Archive) and an excellent contemporary art and food scene. Spend two nights with Gwangju as base: one day in Damyang, one day in Gwangju itself or exploring Boseong’s tea plantations to the south.

What To Explore

A bamboo forest that drops the temperature by three degrees, a 8.5km tree canopy road, and a traditional market with bamboo shoot cuisine.

What should you do in Damyang?

Juknokwon Bamboo Garden — 31 hectares of bamboo reaching 10-15 meters overhead. Walking the main path takes 30-45 minutes; the full trail network takes 1-2 hours. Entry ₩3,000/adult. Open 9 AM-7 PM (summer), 9 AM-6 PM (winter). Go early morning before the buses arrive for the best light and silence.

Metasequoia Road — 8.5km of enormous metasequoia trees forming a complete canopy over the road, planted in the 1970s. Free to walk or cycle. Bicycle rentals available in town from ₩5,000-8,000/hour or ₩15,000/day. Peak beauty in October-November (amber foliage) and April-May (vivid new growth).

Damyang Traditional Market — Opens on the 5th and 10th days of each lunar month. Farmers from across Jeollanam-do sell bamboo shoots (in season: late March-May), bamboo crafts, mountain vegetables, and local food at prices the tourist market would never offer. The best time to see the local life of the bamboo region.

Soswaewon Garden — A 16th-century private garden built by a Joseon scholar in the hills above Damyang. Pavilions, stream, bamboo grove, and stone bridges in a classic Korean garden composition that influenced the entire Joseon-era garden tradition. Entry ₩1,000/adult. A peaceful complement to the main plantation.

Gwanggye Lake Walk — A scenic lake park 3km from the bamboo garden with walking trails and the famous Metasequoia Reed Path (shorter version of the main road). Free. Best at dawn in autumn when mist rises off the water.

Bamboo Crafts Shopping — Damyang has been the center of Korean bamboo craft production for centuries. Baskets, fans, lacquerware, bamboo cutting boards, and furniture made locally — prices significantly below Seoul souvenir shops.

✈️ Scott's Damyang Tips
 • Getting There: KTX from Seoul to Gwangju (1h45m, ₩47,400), then bus from Gwangju Buk Terminal to Damyang (35 min, ₩2,000). Or KTX to Jeonju and a 1.5-hour bus south. Damyang is easy to visit from either city.
 • Best Time: April-May for vivid green Metasequoia new growth and bamboo shoot season. October-November for the amber foliage canopy on the tree road. Both seasons are exceptional; the road looks completely different in each.
 • Money: KRW — ₩25,000/day budget. Juknokwon entry ₩3,000; bicycle rental ₩15,000/day. Dakgalbi lunch ₩10,000-13,000/person. Bamboo craft souvenirs ₩10,000-50,000. Keep cash for the traditional market.
 • Don't Miss: Cycling the full 8.5km Metasequoia Road from one end to the other and back. Budget 2 hours, stop wherever the canopy light is best, and do not rush this particular experience.
 • Food Order: Bamboo shoot bibimbap for lunch (₩11,000), then dakgalbi with glass noodles for dinner (₩12,000-15,000/person), then bamboo shoot makgeolli at a village bar if you can find it (ask locally — not on every menu).
 • Local Phrase: "Daenamu" (대나무) — bamboo. Also useful to know: "jeukseok" (죽석) means bamboo seat/mat — you will see them for sale everywhere and they make excellent lightweight souvenirs.

The Food

Damyang's kitchen is built on bamboo shoots, spicy dakgalbi, and the slow-food traditions of Jeollanam-do farm country.

Where should you eat in Damyang?

Where to Stay

Base in Gwangju for better accommodation choices and use Damyang as a day trip — or stay overnight for early bamboo forest access.

Where should you stay in Damyang?

Damyang Village Guesthouses (₩40,000-80,000/night, $29-59): Several guesthouses and pension accommodations in Damyang town offer clean rooms with local character. The advantage of staying in Damyang rather than Gwangju is early access to Juknokwon — being in the bamboo forest at 7 AM before the buses start arriving is a meaningfully different experience.

Gwangju Hotels (₩60,000-150,000/night, $44-111) — Recommended Base: Gwangju has a full range of hotels from business-class (₩70,000-120,000/night) to international chains. The 35-minute bus to Damyang is fast and reliable. Gwangju also has its own excellent food scene, the May 18th Democracy Memorial Park, and the Asia Culture Center for contemporary arts.

Pension Accommodations (₩80,000-150,000/night, $59-111): Several Korean-style pension guesthouses have opened in the countryside between Damyang and Gwangju, offering private rooms in traditional-style buildings with gardens. These can be excellent if you have a car; less convenient by public bus.

Before You Go

One full day covers bamboo garden, Metasequoia Road by bicycle, and a proper dakgalbi lunch. Two nights if you want the traditional market.

When is the best time to visit Damyang?

Spring (April-May): Vivid new growth on the Metasequoia Road, bamboo shoots in season at markets and restaurants, and comfortable temperatures (15-22°C). The traditional market in early May has fresh shoots direct from farms. A strong first choice.

Summer (June-August): The bamboo forest is at maximum height and density, creating the most dramatic indoor-light photography. Hot and humid (28-34°C) and occasionally rainy in the monsoon period (late June through mid-July). Early morning visits to Juknokwon beat the heat.

Autumn (October-November): The Metasequoia Road turns amber and gold — one of Korea’s most beautiful autumn canopy experiences. Bamboo forest remains green year-round, creating a striking contrast. Comfortable temperatures (12-18°C). The best overall season.

Winter (December-March): Quiet and cold. The Metasequoia Road is bare but photogenic in frost. The bamboo forest is still beautiful and completely uncrowded. Bamboo shoot season returns in late March — a good marker for the start of spring.

Damyang is a one-to-two day destination best embedded in a southwest Korea loop: Seoul by KTX to Jeonju, then Damyang, then Boseong, then back via Gwangju. Each town contributes something entirely different to the overall journey. Explore the full southwest circuit at the Korea travel guide or browse more destinations at the destinations page.
